Artist Statement
My approach to art began with traditional representation which has evolved and continues to do so with both subtle and bold transgressions. Despite this dynamic inclination, I maintain a connection to the surrounding California landscape and the innovations of prominent Bay Area artists. My introduction to oil painting included exposure to paintings by the Bay Area Figurative artists as well as the landscapes of other influential artists of Northern California like the Society of Six.
A period challenging the time I had available for the studio lead to digital painting and is now an important part of my practice, which both takes from traditional methods and revolves back to provide new perspectives for my work in oils. My aim is to use traditional and modern tools to distort and fragment the real, not with the intention to deceive, but rather to paint a sincere representation of the reflective experience. Considering space, like time, is not felt in precise fixed measures.
My projects in oils begin with unruly marks that I then try to tame, while letting the persistent ones be. Working on the surface as much as beyond it where contemplative thoughts prevail. With this, I hope to offer an approachable space for an uninhibited and intimate dialogue with the viewer. Where those unruly and persistent marks may grant us permission to be as such.
